ABOUT
"STAR TREK: DEFIANT":
"Star Trek:
Defiant" is a full-cast, ongoing sci-fi serial adventure based
upon the Star Trek television series.
Defiant started
off as a text-based story list in early October of 1995. Believe
it or not, that list is still around. I actually met my wife there.
:)
But back then,
Defiant was really something new and different on the newborn, barren
wasteland of the internet. A bunch of fans with a similar passion
for Star Trek came together and formed close friendships while telling
stories about our fictional crew set upon my favorite of all the
Star Trek ships, the USS Defiant (of Deep Space Nine fame).
You may notice
that an awful lot of the characters share names with the people
who created them/actors who play them, including myself. Back then
we didn't know who each other were, and so it was a decision we
made to name a bunch of the characters after ourselves simply so
that we could learn each other's names. Not a very exciting story,
perhaps, but there it is. :)
Defiant has
a long and rich history that all of its members have formed together
over the past decade, and it's my complete honor to bring Defiant
to a wider audience in the realm of audio. We are absolutely making
it accessible to everyone, so you don't need to know ten years of
Defiant history in order to understand or enjoy the episodes. But
we will try to incorporate some of the more major events from our
past into some storylines to help new listeners learn more about
Defiant and the universe she interacts in.

anyone be interested in taking on directing duties upon Star Trek
Defiant as soon as possible? Just let me know."
Would anyone
be interested? I don't know about the rest of you but I sure as
hell am. When the email came round asking for someone to take control
of directing Defiant, there was no way I was going to miss the opportunity.
I can't imagine
my life without Star Trek. No really, I can't. I discovered it all
by myself at the innocent age of eight and was instantly hooked
by the adventure, the stories, the characters and the big-ass space
battles. I loved it all and went out of my way to make sure I caught
every episode as it aired on BBC2. Between me and my brother, we
recorded from TV the majority of trek that came out from 1992 to
2000. Those VHS tapes still exist in my parent's attic, much to
their chagrin.
It wasn't just
the sci-fi elements that grabbed me though. Even as a young kid
I was inspired by the elements of a better society, one that had
gone beyond the petty squabbling over money and land and was putting
its efforts and energy towards a greater purpose. There were still
problems, there were still those seduced by wealth and power but
the majority fought against it and fought against their own flaws
and failings in the ongoing quest to become better people. Star
Trek challenged and questioned things that others in the world just
accepted. It was the first show to have an 'interracial' kiss on
TV, it was the first show to have a kiss between two women and they
had a Russian on the Enterprise during the COLD WAR! Certain people
were outraged and you know if you're outraging certain people, you're
doing something right.
The world today
is a very different place than it was when Star Trek was first born.
The Cold War is over and statutory racism has supposedly been quashed.
The integration of a Russian into the crew is no longer a story
nor is a kiss between a black woman and white man but there is certainly
a whole wealth of social commentary a show such as Star Trek can
make.
I am now 23
and I watched, with a growing sadness, as Trek got caught in its
own hype and refused to question the social 'norms' that is had
once challenged so readily. We never saw same sex relationships
in any form except the aforementioned kiss, the federation stopped
exploring and just started shooting, the show seemed much more concerned
about churning out another high octane Borg fight than a well constructed
story and more and more the aliens of the week were the 'bad guys'
who needed to be stopped by the 'great' Federation. The show didn't
grow and develop, the writers became lazy and the vision became
blurred.
The final nail
hit the coffin in June 2005 when Enterprise, even after a fantastic
fourth season just couldn't sell itself to an audience now captured
by Battlestar Galactica, Lost and Firefly. That seemed to be the
end of Trek as we knew it.
Spin forward
seven months and I'm stumbling across Pendant Audio in much the
same way I one stumbled across Star Trek. Not long after I joined
the group, the first episode of Star Trek Defiant aired and suddenly
I could hear all the reasons that I had fallen in love with the
show as a kid. I am so happy to be involved with a production that
is maintaining that Trek feel as well as also striking out to forge
new ground in the political and sociological sphere.
Entertainment,
be it on the screen, audio or in book form should seek to amaze
and astound you but I strongly feel it should never be for entertainments
sake alone. If you're going to tell a story, make sure it means
something both to you and to your audience. On Defiant, Jeffery
has successfully done all of the above and more, putting Star Trek
back where it should be. Not just battles in space but a mirror
on our own world and way of life.
The trials that
affect us today will not be those of the future, just as those that
affected us in 1966 are not that ones we battle with today. There
will always be trials though, there will always be struggles and
conflicts and in any vision of the future it is important to show
these. It is also important to show the developments, the breakthroughs,
the triumphs and the successes that we have the potential of making.
Star Trek has always been the perfect show to do this and whilst
on the small and big screen it may have lost its way out here on
the glorious World Wide Web the fans and the dreamers make sure
it lives on as it should.
To everyone
reading this, fan, member or passer by, have a listen and let us
know what you think. Star Trek is for all, it gives us the dream
and the ideal that once we have overcome the problems facing us
here, we look to the stars and we continue our voyages of discovery
and wonder far into the future.

One summer in
college I read a book, “Star Trek: The New Voyages,” edited
by Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath which included a story by
Claire Gabriel entitled “Ni Var,” dealing with both the
concept of duality and heartfelt friendship. (Apparently I’m
not the only one who felt a profound emotional resonance in this
story -- in the most recent Star Trek television series, “Enterprise,”
a Vulcan ship was named “Ni Var,” as an homage to Gabriel’s
story.) It was after I read this collection that I wrote my first
Star Trek story. I’d been writing science fiction from the
time I was eleven (and still do), but I never thought about writing
a Star Trek story. The idea that I might project myself into a fantasy
future, that I might participate in that vision, that I might even
fly with these people . . . well, that was a temptation too seductive
to pass up and I had no intention of passing it up. In fact, I was
willing to do whatever it took to dive in head-over-heels.
I did not continue
writing stories set in the Star Trek universe, but a kind of Star
Trek serial took place in my head (along with so many “other”
worlds) over the years as a continued source of comfort and inspiration.
It wasn’t until I met some interesting, wonderful people online
on a list and was invited to join “Defiant,” a fan fiction
list that I decided once again to actually write some organized
Star Trek stories. This time, however, I’d be part of a “crew”
of people, all of whom would be writing, with each other as characters.
I was pleased and excited by the premise as well as the promise
of what it meant. It seemed like a dream come true, that I could
find these cool people like myself with whom I would be sharing
a universe I had inhabited alone for a very long time.
I am going to
take this moment and opportunity to speak of Jeffrey Bridges, the
creator of the Defiant list and Pendant Productions. He invited
me to join the original list and we discovered that we shared our
writing ambitions in common with our other interests, which helped
forge a bond that became a deep and abiding friendship. I have visited
him and Susan and their son Clark (and they’re even more wonderful
and fun in person). I trust him with outrageous ideas as well as
secrets. He is not only a talented writer and director, (as well
as possessing a seemingly endless source of creative energy), he
is truly one of the best men I have ever known. When he asked me
if I’d consider assuming responsibility for the writing duties
of the Defiant audio series, I knew that it was an act of faith
and trust, one that I embraced with the knowledge that acceptance
meant in addition to what I conceived for the continuing Defiant
story, it also meant honoring Jeffrey’s legacy. It is my intention
and hope that I do so.
In the very
first story I wrote for the Defiant list, I invoked the concept
of “Ni Var,” with one of the other early members. We didn’t
know each other, but I suggested that we write the story together
about how we’d become (unlikely) friends at the Academy (her
character was Vulcan and mine was Bajoran). What happened was that
we became friends for real and although she’s no longer on
the list, her friendship remains a warm and enduring memory because
the story we wrote has endured. One of the miraculous aspects of
creating any kind of art is that as long as someone sees/reads/hears
it, it, and all that went into its creation, it lives on.
One of my idols
is a science fiction writer named James Tiptree, Jr., aka Alice
Sheldon. She wrote a story called “Beam Us Home,” in which
a young boy believes in the Star Trek universe, that he really belongs
there and although he’s teased about his oddness, he holds
onto that belief throughout his life. He becomes an Air Force pilot,
the closest he can come to what he believes is his true self and
one day, yes, he’s “taken up” into a space ship.
It’s not Kirk or Picard and crew, but they’re intelligent
and understanding, and he knows that he has indeed come home.

We have expanded
far beyond a fan fiction list into the medium of audio drama, added
new crew for new functions (director), but through tears and fears,
joys and triumphs, silences and transformations, the Defiant list
has endured in large part for the same reasons that the Star Trek
universe itself has endured. It possesses, through its people, its
crew, the qualities that Gene Roddenberry envisioned for a future
and its inhabitants in infinite diversities and infinite combinations:
tolerance, loyalty, compassion, humor, humility in spite of technological
advances, honor and friendship that go beyond duty and convention.
We are each of us that one in a thousand, a combination of many
who consider the needs of the one vital, a crew that has no need
or desire to go anywhere but where we are because we are already
and ultimately home.
But if you’re
ready to join us in our adventures on the U.S.S. Defiant to the
far and wondrous distance, we are waiting to beam you aboard.
