ABOUT
"WONDER WOMAN: CHAMPION OF THEMYSCIRA":
"Wonder
Woman: Champion of Themyscira" is an ongoing monthly serial
adventure based on the modern incarnation of the character in DC
Comics.
Unlike Susan, I was out of Wonder Woman comics, and on my way out of
comics in general, by the time Greg Rucka wrote his issues, although I
remember them vaguely. My Wonder Woman comics fandom goes back to
just after Crisis, and George Perez, who remade the character in the
image she deserved: steeped in mythology, relevant to humanity, and
reflective of femininity, despite the male writer. These are the
issues that substantially inspired the 2009 animated movie. Read
them, if you haven't and you can. But... this isn't why I wound up
directing this show.
The honest truth is that I was looking for a way to get involved --
work is the best way to become part of a working community! -- and I
expressed interest and took the director's class and was given the
job. Literally, it was just the right place at the right time, and
not because of my undying fandom for Wonder Woman. (The truth is, I
grew up a Marvel boy, but never mind.)
What this should tell you about this series is this: it went from
something to do, to something that made me crazy, to something that I
became a part of and vice versa, to something I gladly hold up and say
with pride, "I help make this." Susan, and more recently Megan, have
honed this show over years of episodes until for once, I truly believe
that in Diana as one of the "trinity" of DC heroes (and no coincidence
that this was one of the first three Earth P shows!)
We take Diana very seriously. And sometimes, very humorously. And
always, with dignity and a desire to make her and her expanding circle
of friends, enemies and acquaintances interesting, exciting, and
vivid. Hopefully we get it right a little more every episode. It has
been and continues to be very satisfying to be a part of that.
R. Francis Smith
Director (issues 31 - present), "Wonder Woman: Champion of Themyscira"
---
The story of
me working on this is fairly short. See, I've been reading comics
for a few years now, and there are some characters that I feel are
very misunderstood. One of those very misunderstood characters is
Wonder Woman.
I really enjoyed
the work that Greg Rucka did with Wonder Woman's character, and
I wanted a way to extend that. Who knows what the new incarnation
will bring, but my desire to work on it stemmed from the fact that
Greg Rucka has really fleshed out a character who, until now, has
been a third player in the DC universe who deserved far more recognition
than she was getting.
With the help
of my husband, I've managed to bring creativity back into my life
by writing more frequently, but I wasn't terribly confident about
it, and Jeffrey urged me to try to take the reins on this. I felt
in the beginning that it wasn't something that I could do; there
were so many other people that I felt must have followed the character
more closely, who would know what to do better than I would.
But, in the
end, I thought, maybe I'd be able to not only get by, but actually
do well. And when I started writing, and the characters started
taking over and doing things for themselves, I knew it would probably
all turn out OK.
Then again,
if it's not OK, I figure you'll all write me and let me know.
And special
thanks to Diana, who has allowed me to walk in the footsteps of
an Amazon princess for a little while.
